Port Loko Teachers College (PLTC) was established in 1966 by the Teachers Colleges Act, and was initially meant exclusively for the training of female teachers at the primary and lower secondary levels. The scope of training was eventually expanded to include male teachers. It could be described as one of the oldest teachers colleges in the country. The Polytechnics Act, 2001, upgraded PLTC to the status of a polytechnic, along with other colleges in the country.
